i didn't see anything in the manual and had a quick question on syphon. i see that we get syphon output, channel 1 and channel 2. does this mean that we can only send frames to a syphon client and not receive frames?

The manual entry is only brief and in the Preferences section. The simple answer is yes: MixEmergency can only send frames from the output (and both channels). The slightly more complex answer is: MixEmergency can recieve frames by loading a Quartz Composition that uses the Syphon Quartz Composer plug-in. You can see this in action here: http://twitpic.com/35glwj ....which is MixEmergency sending the main output (using a Grid transition) to Syphon, and then the right channel has that same input received (via a Quartz Composition).

Of course, you wouldn't route the output of MixEmergency back to itself.... it was just done for the fun of it (and to see how it would be handled).

thanks Nick, i have gotten ME to work as syphon server and as a syphon client (via quartz composer). it works great. now i'm just trying to be creative with what i can do. if you have any suggestions, by all means please feel free to comment.

Yeah - it's probably hard to know where to begin because there are so many possibilities. Hopefully we'll see a few videos pop up on the internet over the next few weeks so that people can get an idea of how other users are using it.

No, unfortunately MixEmergency cannot record this type of input. When you go to export the video it will display whatever is currently connected to that Syphon input (as long as the Quartz Composition is set up that way).

It is possible to record MixEmergency's output video using the Syphon Recorder application though, but then you lose most of the benefits of recording with MixEmergency (e.g. you can render at a constant frame rate, whatever dimensions you want, very low CPU usage while recording, etc).

So if I have the newest version of Mix Emergency (1.7.2) and my Syphon option under preferences does not exist. Where is my problem?

The underlying technology that Syphon uses was only made available in Mac OS 10.6. I suspect you are running Mac OS 10.5?

Ok your right I need to update my OS. Is mix emergency fully compatible with Lion cause I was considering upgrading to that?

Yep - it's working with Lion (that's what I'm using).

Nick i got a question. Is this possible? I play on 3 decks in serato. 2 for music 1 for the bridge. I would like to have the bits I play in ableton to trigger video clips. I could do that in Grand VJ i think. so ever clip i lunch would trigger video clips also. now it would be sweet to have a .qtz that sucked the output of grandVJ (via syphon), and them load that .qtz file in the overlay quartz. and set it to when no clips are playing in ableton that the .qtz overlay was transparent. I would still want to map the overlays mix (wet/dry) to a midi knob for when im cueing up ableton clips. Any reason on why that wouldn't work? My original Idea was to syphon video out of ME and mix it and do all the effects in Grand VJ. But i have my girl, or sometimes a friend, do all my video mixing and i want it to be easy for them to mix back and forth and i think Grand VJ is a little over there head. My Girl was doing all my Video mixing on VSL and shes got that down. now with ME i put all the ME windows on a 2nd monitor and the Video Output to the 3rd monitor(which is the out to the Screens in the club). So she can see and effect all the control in ME via Midi and doesn't use up an screen real-estate on my screen.

I don't know too much about GrandVJ, but if it can output to Syphon then you should have no problems using a Quartz Composition overlay to add the output over MixEmergency (you'll need to install the Syphon Quartz Composer plug-in first though). I'm not sure about the specifics of having the overlay transparent when no clips are playing in ableton, but at the very least you can mix it in/out with the wet/dry overlay mix.

Quick question about syphon, what would be the server name of the syphon output from mix emergency. I am tying to get the output into quartz

It's the same as they're written in the Preferences. So you would have: Application Name: MixEmergency Server Name: Output (or Channel 1/Channel 2 if you want the left or right channels)
