Suggestions for LumaKey Transition.

hi, i've been beta test'n for VSL for over a year now but i have to say i'm liking ME a little bit more now. Suggestion: i'd like to see the lumaKey transition VolumeFader based rather than CrossFader based. i think that the crossfader should be the same no matter where it is and the volumefaders should blend the lumakey. this would make lumakey more smooth to mix with... thanks for a great product!

Interesting - though I'm not 100% sure that I understand exactly how you would expect this to work (i.e. I'm not exactly sure what actions you would be making on the mixer to accomplish this). With luma keying you need to know the top and bottom image and the level at which to key the luminosity - currently we listen to the crossfader to figure out which is the top and bottom images (i.e. the top image is from the side you are fading from, and is set when your crossfader touches either side). This current technique could create problems if you moved the crossfader across before you have completely faded the volumefader. It would be fairly easy to replace the crossfader value with something like the ratio between the two volume faders.

i think the way it would work is the Left volumefader is 0-50% and the right volumefader is 0-50%. the parrameters of the crossfader are either on or off. so if the Right volumefader is all the way up and the Left volumefader is down, the image still looks normal (lumakey is cuting the % of black out but replacing it with the background whick is also black). As you bring up the Right volumefader it is mixing from 0-50% with the Left channel which is at 50%. When both volume faders are all the way up they are at a 50-50% mix. The crossfader at this point is controling wether it is off (far left or right) or on (anywhere inbetween) this would not work with the lumakey white however... is this do-able?

I'm still a little confused about how this would be implemented. Not sure whether you want a luma key effect quite different to the one we already have. Currently we use the luminosity to key out one image over another image (starting a low luminosity "lumakey black" or high luminosity "lumakey white"). So the pipeline goes something like this (excuse the bad ascii graphs): image1 ---- lumakey ---- output image2 ------^ If I understand you correctly, you want something that keys both images to black, and then mixes them, like this: black -----------v image1 ---- lumakey1 ---- dissolve (e.g. your 50/50 mix) ---- output image2 ---- lumakey2 ---------^ black -----------^ (where the dissolve ratio would be the ratio of left upfader to right upfader)

i was a bit mistaken on my above discription. ME's lumakey works how i would like when both volume faders are up. however, if the leftfader is up, the rightfader is down and the Xfader is in the middle, the output image(left fader) is being keyed to something that isn't there. thus darkening the output. what i'm after is to be able to have the leftfader up, rightfader down, Xfader anywhere in it's on position, and the output be unaffected until the rightfader starts to come up. at that point the rightfader image starts to show through the black of leftfader image at the amount the Xfader deems. hope that makes sence... :)

Ah - I see what you mean. It is an interesting suggestion. I think that this idea could be expanded to incorporate the upfaders into the transition control for all transitions (as when used for audio mixing they can be/are a part of the transition) - though I wonder if it would be very noticeable ones other than the lumakey transitions. I'll make a note to look in to this a little further.

It hasn't been forgotten, and will be considered for inclusion in 1.4. I'm still not certain on the best way to implement this however. MixEmergency 1.3 was primarily a release to significantly improve the CPU/GPU performance - so it didn't have a whole bunch of new features added.
