Keep having problems with video files

When I started using my own edits the video in ME freezes on certain frames while the keeps going. I also get a message that says distance between keyframes is greater than it should be.

It only happens on videos that were made with HD content

Well, it sounds as though your keyframes are too far apart. If you open up the file MixEmergency.log (located at the path ~/Movies/MixEmergency/) you should be able to search for the file that you're having problems with, and see a short report on the keyframes present in your file (e.g. max distances). To fix this you would need to export your videos with a lower minimum keyframe distance (generally I recommend around 25 frames apart).

I exported my files uncompressed from final cut and it did not give me a keyframe option, it just said all. I then compressed it in mpeg streamclip to an mp4 file.

I am also still having problems with the recording, I was recording in the wave format, and when I updated to 1.7.2 it started to have the problem again.

When you compress the file to MP4 in mpeg streamclip there should be some options to choose the keyframe distance.

I can set the framerate, but I don't see anywhere to set keyframes.

Yeah, I've just had a look at it. There aren't any options for keyframes when you go to the menu item File -> Export to MPEG-4, but if you go to File -> Export to Other Formats -> MPEG-4 then there is an Options button that you can push that will allow you to change the settings for the keyframe rate.

The quality isn't at 50%, it's just greyed out. You will need to set it up to some decent settings though. For example: File Format: MP4 Video Format: H.264 Data Rate: (this is up to you really, and will determine the quality. the default settings are very very low for this) Image Size: (whatever it is that you are using) and for the audio, make sure that you change it from 128 kbps to something more acceptable, such as 192, 256, or 320. Generally I recommend setting the keyframe distance to around 25.

The data rate is up to you, and will also depend on the dimensions of the video. For standard definition video, I would start with exporting at 3000 kbps and then export the same video multiple times (each time adding 1000 kbps to the data rate). Then compare that video and find a data rate that is acceptable to you (both in terms of quality and filesize).
