aha! what was causing the problem was that each time i tried resizing it, i would try get to the corner and when i clicked, i accidentally activated whichever app was running behind ME i.e SSL or Finder - don't know if that makes sense you just have to make sure ME is the active application and it works fine - pinned or unpinned.
