Hi Karl, I'm not too sure about using Quartz Compositions in Final Cut. With regards to the video input, I'm not too sure. A few QC related bugs have been fixed in 1.6, so once this is out (which shouldn't be too far away) can you try them again and see if they're working (and if they're not then I'll see what can be done). From my experience playing around with the video input patch in Quartz Composer I can say that it isn't often very efficient (i.e. it uses a lot of CPU).
