Upfaders vs Crossfader

I'm a DJ who uses the up-faders almost exclusively (never the crossfader). Whenever I start-up ME for the night, I have to 'fight' with the software to recognize the up-faders and 'mix' the videos. The crossfader works fine though. This process usually involves me playing and fiddling around with the "use external controller crossfader / upfader" checkbox options in the preferences turning them on and off and moving the faders around until I get pissed off... it eventually 'catches' and starts to work, but it's a lot of messing around. Is there a way to just get this to work properly? what am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, exactly, but you need to make sure that the crossfader is in the center position when using the up-faders to mix. If it's closed at either side (left, or right), then the up-fader mixing mode is disabled, and it will display the side that the crossfader is closed to.

Even if 'use external crossfader' is UNCHECKED?

If it's unchecked, then you would need to MIDI map the crossfader, or it may work that you can set the crossfader in the center position with the mouse (I'm not near my gear to try this, at the moment). The up-fader mixing mode requires all 3 faders.
