Running SSL 2.1 vs older versions

Are there any advantages of running 2.1, 2.0 vs 1.9 or 1.8? It would seem to me that ME might run better using older more stripped down versions of serato? Thoughts? Experiences?

Not really - though I've heard there is a bug in the official release of Scratch Live 2.1 that causes video files/tags to be rewritten after playing them, which can cause an increased stress/load on your computer.

Thanks!!! I think I am gonna bust back down to 1.9, 2.0 is cool but not necessary...I am new to ME but really enjoying it. Just downloaded the transitions, looks super sweet!

I found that 1.9.3 runs identical to VSL. But with 2.0 ME lags the waveforms.

hahah, I think I will back it back down to 1.9.2 i have had issues with the waveforms laggin as well.

Im on 1.9.2 + the newest ME Im on the i7 17"+2.66 Im not getting the choppy waveforms... but every few seconds (8-10) i get a little stuttering in the waveform display...it last 1-3 seconds. it was MORE evident when I had the waveform view zoomed all the way in. when i zoomed out...it wasnt as obvious, but still doing it. I have done the tweaks needed, and talked to some veteran ssl/ME users and most have suggested this is an OS issue with macs... its not a HUGE deal, but its a bit of annoyance considering a how much horse power i got

oh, just curious. I noticed you mentioned on other threads that we should reduce the 2nd display refresh rate to 50 (from 60) what would happen if we reduced the display setting in SSL screen refresh rate from 60-50/40 (seeing how the laggy waveforms are happening on the main display in ssl, not on the 2nd display) just a pedestrian theory.

I don't think that reducing the SSL screen refresh rate would solve this particular problem (as the main LCD screen would still be updating at 60 Hz). Have you updated your OS to 10.6.5? I'm interested to see if people notice whether the update has had any effect. I've only had time to perform brief tests, but it appeared to be running a little smoother than before.

yeah, i just got this last week, its sterile and fresh out the box with the newest update. I thought the SSL Refresh rate under the display TAB is for the monitor (not a 2nd display) this control is in the setup tab, not in the VSL tab. so, in essence you would be reducing the 2nd display from 60 to 50 in the mac system properties (as described) and lowering the main laptop display from 60-50 in the SSL Control panel (personally Id rather have my 2nd display at 60, and my monitor at 40/50)

The Scratch Live refresh rate setting is only for how often Scratch Live tries to update the screen - it doesn't have any effect on the actual screen itself (you can see this for yourself by running SL at 10 FPS, or some other low value, and MixEmergency at 60 FPS on the same screen - reducing the SL refresh rate won't decrease the MixEmergency refresh rate).

ok...maybe Ive talked myself into a circle here. lemme make sure im understanding this right. [the problem:] 1. in SSL the waveform display is intermittently choppy on the laptop screen. [whats NOT a problem} 1. 2nd display @ 60hrz/640x480 @ 100% quality so, in this instance we need to adjust the refresh rate on the laptop. becuase everything on the output screen is just fine. so, does the SSL screen-refresh rate apply to the SSL interface, and how it sends it to you laptop display? u can see here exactly what I mean: http://serato.com/manuals/scratchlive/rane-sl1/2.1/display they suggest THERE that if your having performance issues, dropping that down might help....again, Ill test this once i have everything hooked up again this week

FYI, just here on my pc...on internal mode reducing the refresh rate down to 30 before you can start to see the flicker of there not being enough frames refreshed fast enough to give you a proper/smooth waveform display. at 20/30..and even 40 a tad you see ttheres almost like a subtle strobe, or flicker to the waveforms rolling. though, I wont know how it effects the Mac... this PC runs vsl smooth as ice on the waveforms...so its not a good benchmark

When they say "This setting applies to the entire screen" on that manual page, what they really mean is that "This setting applies to the entire Scratch Live window contents".... the screen still has a 60 Hz (or whatever your screen is set up to use) refresh rate. Anyway, the possible solution that I have suggested, and that works for some users, is to change the refresh rate of the external monitor (through the Mac OS System Preferences) to something other than 60 Hz (for example, 50 Hz).

ok, i got home. did all these things... for this particular monitor i guess theres no 50hz (its just a little hanspree 19"led monitor) once i get up to 1024 theres 56 hrz and like 74 all the others are grayed out. i also tried reducing the ssl refresh as i mentioned. that, coupled with reducing the ME quality to the 70% area helped things out a bit. but not really. Ill get a video tomorrow....
