Using external monitor at 2560 x 1440

Recently my brother brought home a gorgeous display manufactured by Asus, the model is PB278Q 27' IPS panel display with a resolution of 2560x1440 connectivity consists of HDMI 1.4, D-Sub, DisplayPort 1.2, Dual-link DVI-D. Yesterday when I attempted to use mixemergency using my latest rMBP with 8gigs of ram no dedicated GPU along side this monitor using a HDMI-to-HDMI cable, any effects applied would lag and get fairly choppy. Ive tried every setting within mixemergency with no success, I can't seem to downsize the resolution with Apples display settings. I assume this is due to the fact that I am using only an HDMI-to-HDMI cable, if so--would the solution be to use a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable or a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter + a DVI-D cable? I think that the easiest thing to try would be to set the Quality setting (on the Display panel of MixEmergency's Preferences) to 50%. This will cause the output of MixEmergency to be processed internally at 1280 x 720 when fullscreen on this display.

Right, but that still wouldn't help the problem if I'm not mistaken. The rMBP isn't the culprit in terms of performance. This is evident upon viewing the CPU and overall system load, doesn't matter what kind of effect I'm using or even 2-4 effects on top of that, the load on the mac hardly breaks a sweat.

It sounds like it's not the CPU that's having problems though - it's the GPU (which will be the integrated Intel Iris Graphics).

It appears that you are correct Nick. Last night, I connected the macbook pro to a monitor at 1080p and everything ran flawlessly without any lag or tearing. The GPU struggles to render the effects smoothly at a resolution mentioned in the title. Thanks for the clearing up everything for me. Mixemergency rocks, cheers.
